Small-town store takes sick bet on Obama
The Tampa News.Net Friday 21st November, 2008
A store in Standish, Maine, has come under fire after asking customers to place bets on an assassination of President-elect Barack Obama.
Anger flared in the US town where some citizens condemned the sign while others defended the store owner, saying he had a right to “bad taste” free speech.
A resolution passed by the town council and posted on its website said: "The town of Standish condemns in the strongest terms any such alleged activity calling for violence against any individual no matter their position, race or ethnicity."
The sign in the general store, under the title "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," asked customers to place a $1 bet on the date of Obama's assassination, and said "Let's hope someone wins."
The store in the town has remained closed since the controversy began last weekend.

Symptoms of a Sad Society
I heard today on CNN that a Washington based security analysis team have predicted the possible downfall of the USA as the worldâs leading superpower by the year 2020. Given the state of their economy, the mess they are in Iraq and the type of nutters that seem to live free and easy in that sad society, I think the 2020 prediction is way to optimistic.

What can you say to such ?
I am pleased to read that all posters thus far see the actions of the store owner to be disgraceful and a sad example of the attitudes of some in America and no doubt other parts of the world. Despite there being much bigger issues to deal with, surely the store owner should be subjected to some sort of sanction.

Look, I have grown up in small towns in the USA. There are always a few really crazy people there too. It is SO sad to hear such things. I was really hoping that we had grown up more than this. Oh, by the way... I did not vote for either of the main contenders.

It is wrong, and it saddens me. What is he teaching children who seen that sign? Grow up and stop being a small minded, racist, redneck. If he doesnt like our President then he should move to another Country. I hope he never gets to open his doors for business again.

dead end
They obviously don’t care about the US. I’m sure much of the world wouldn’t mind us going the way of the USSR. Even an assassination attempt would probably mean the end of the US and, unfortunately, much of the world as we know it, as we’re intrinsically linked to much of it economically. The resulting chaos would escalate precipitously. You think the economy is bad now? It’d be Katy bar the door!

Threats
Saying " I think Pres. So-and-So may be in danger of assassination." is a far cry from setting a betting pool on the possibility.
That’s VERY close to making a threat himself, which is a Federal offense!

I AGREE WITH YOU. INFACT I LIKED SEN MACAIN MORE THEN 2 B PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA DUE TO HIS MIL BACKGROUND,AGE FACTOR AND EXPOSURE TO WORLD ISSUES.BUT SLOGAN OF CHANGE GIVEN BY OBAMA SUPERSEDED EVERY THING.I THINK WE SHOULD ALL FORGIVE THE STORE OWNER FOR HIS NARROW APPROACH AND START LOOKING FORWARD FOR A POSITIVE CHANGE AT GLOBAL LEVEL.

Interesting the type of people that would condemn others for the same things they practice against the Arabs. Before you open your typing fingers, it was all of you 80% of you anyway that backed the war in Iraq, yet you turn your back on Bush so quikly when things got bad, now what kind of example does that make for Obama to see?

I almost forgot, when the eagles wings (america) were plucked from the lions back (britain) you idiots formed the 11th king, democracy. Have a nice end times. P.S. has anyone else been curious as to why they are killing off all the lionesses? I mean first Mariah then Diana then Madelen Mccain, then in Reno Breana Zunino Dennison and the rest of the girls they try to sex traffic, all lionesses, and yes I forwarded this information against the Illuminati king of Britain ( the queens husband) to Prince William. Brittains presence in the middle east will dissapear and America will soon be all alone in a very hostile land, so what do you supose the Illuminati’s next move is? They can’t kill off the Lions den now that they have been exposed, I suspect they will openly try to assasinate Prince Wiliam or Henry to make themselves seem powerful. Wiliam however has a very powerfull ally, so does Henry.

Sick people who hide behind freedom of expression
In the first place it is illegal to place bets without a betting license from the state.
In the second place this man is breaking federal laws that protect the life of the pesident, because in this case this man is advocating the presumed death of our president, and I believe this is an istigation for the criminal elements to place bets on this misfortune, and surely when money is involved corrupt, and sick minds could practice evil.
I the third place, all the honest law abiding citizens of this small insignificant small town should boycot this establishment, and isolate this sick person, or they can make sure that a psychological screening be performed to evaluate his reasoning mental capèacity, because a person that conducyss himself in this manner is not normal in according to my judgement.
Sammy, GO OBAMA, all the honest people of the world are with you, and we all wish you a very long life.

I use to live on OakHill where the store is. I don’t think the pool was tasteful, but i think the owner of the store had every right to do it. I can assume that he is obviously unhappy with who the president elect is and is probably using this as a means to voice his frustration and not as anything to serious. Most of the people that live in that part of Standish are older back woods folks, and I can defiantly understand where they are coming from.
