SAN FERNANDO CITY, Oct. 14 (PIA) - The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Regional Welfare Office I (OWWA RWOI) recognized the winners of the Search for 2019 Model Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Family of the Year Awards (2019 MOFYA) on October 3, here.
A total of five families were nominated for the regional MOFYA, three for the land-based category and two under the sea-based category and is aimed to highlight the role of OFW families acting as one body in attaining socio-economic, educational, professional and material success.
This year's search recognized two families as regional winners namely the families of OFWs Pacita Calano Gorgonio of Dingras, Ilocos Norte and Rey Gerdan Biteng of Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur for the land-based and sea-based categories, respectively.
"We are very honored to present the awards to our model families because they are an inspiration to other OFWs in our country," said Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 1 assistant regional director and chairman of the Regional Screening and Selection Committee (RSSC) Honorina Dian Baga.

"We would like to congratulate the two regional winners and the other nominees for holding their family together amidst the challenges of life, and what they have showed to us is a perfect example of what OFWs must replicate," she added.
On September 24, the RSSC judged and deliberated the nominees based on wholesomeness and solidarity of the family, excellence in education and profession, business and financial management, and civic and community involvement.
Further, the RSSC is composed of representatives from DOLE, OWWA, and the Diocesan Ministry for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (DMMI) with Engr. Robert Ranchez, and Dr. Aida Cuanang, 2015 and 2018 national winners, respectively.

The Gorgonio and Biteng families will represent the Ilocos Region in the national search scheduled on December 5 at the Malacanan Palace in Manila.
Aside from the two winners, the other nominees were Jeffrey Dungca Javier and Family of Bangar, La Union who was also awarded and commended for Civic and Social Involvement; Sandy Pande Santos and Family of Balungao, Pangasinan, the recipient of the commendation on Entrepreneurship; and Jaime Florida Gallegos, Jr. and Family of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, for the commendation on Family Solidarity.
In an interview with Gorgonio, who worked as an OFW for 30 years, she said, "I was not expecting the award because amongst the nominees, my educational attainment is only until highschool and so I am very grateful to the panelists and I will treasure this award throughout my life."
Moreover, OWWA RWOI also expressed their hopes to bring home another national award this year.
MOFYA is an annual institutional event of OWWA that envisions to share success stories about OFW families which highlights resiliency and strength of character amidst the challenges of overseas employment in aid of uplifting the image of the community. (JCR/AMB/AHFF/PIA1)
